Back before Xbox Live or PSN gamers could play against each other through other methods. It even went as far back as the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo with devices such as the X-Band. For a monthly fee players could connect and play against each other using a dial-up connection. At the height of the service, they had 7000 subscribers.
